“Comfortable, Friendly, Average ”
The hotel is very centrally located, and it feels very safe to be there. We only stayed a few hours for sleeping before our flight early in the next morning. the hotel is very big, cuban style. The staff offer welcome drinks, and the receptionist was very kind in offering us breakfast even though the buffet was closed by the time we checked out.
The rooms are very average. There are no windows in the rooms, apart from the suite ones, which of course are more expensive than the price that you have paid. It is not worth it in my opinion to upgrade. For this reason I found that the rooms were having a special odour.
Overall I would recommend it as the staff are kind, friendly and helpful, but the rooms are average.
“Such a lovely place! But. ”
Hotel Velasco in Matanzas is like out of a dream, or from a Latin American "Telenovela". A truely fascinating place, splendid, marvilhous, colonial, rich architecture. Each detail designed and produced with love and attention, from the chairs to the bar, from the plates to the entrance signs. (There must have been spend quite some money here.)
But the problem, is the Cuba-typical unfriendly treatment by parts of the staff (with exeption of the cleaning staff). The welcome was rather unwelcoming, people were not too interested, breakfast so lala. And if you have to complain about anything (the ridiculously expensive internet, which doesnt work, for example) than nobody helps, or at least tries to.
In any case, if you dont mind the "but", than it is a great place for one or two nights or so. The more expensive rooms have a real balcony and window. The smaller ones some window "the maintenance department will open" - in other words: expect none.
